A happy little reader

At the beginning of the year this little person started borrowing at our library when his big sister started in Prep. He was three and a half years old.

You will see him borrowing in our library most mornings before school. He has his own little routine where he posts his library book in the Returns chute and then comes around and takes it out of the box and hands it to me and has a little chat. (I love it!) Then off he goes to find a book.

Recently he has been borrowing information books about sea animals. Our happy reader lines up with the big kids and knows to turn his book to the back so he can scan the barcode. He then puts his book in his library bag and happily wanders out to meet his mum. He has borrowed 22 books so far this year and he isn’t even at officially at our school yet!

The other week our little reader popped into the library at the end of the day instead and I was teaching a Year 6 class. That didn’t worry him! He returned his book and went over ready to scan his new book. The Year 6s were watching in awe. When I asked if he had enjoyed the octopus book he explained that an octopus has suction cups on its legs. You could hear the jaws of the Year 6 students drop! He confidently scanned his book and went on his way…a happy little reader who feels at home in our library.

Congratulations to our Premiers’ Reading Challenge Readers

Congratulations to our 70 students who completed the Premiers’ Reading Challenge!

This year 221,800 Victorian school students participated in the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge.

All together our students read 2,812 books and each student who completed the PRC received a certificate for their fabulous reading effort to complete the challenge.

The student who read the most books from each year level also received a small trophy to recognise their reading stamina.

Our PRC 2016 medal was awarded to a Year 6 student who has participated in the PRC each year during her time at St Martin’s…Congratulations on being such a wonderful reading role model!

Pig the Pug’s Global Reading Adventures

We have had so much fun taking our two Pig the Pugs home to read to this year for #ReadingIsFun that I thought the students in Mrs Hembree’s library in Seattle might enjoy doing this too! Mrs Hembree was surprised to meet Pig the Pug and very interested to hear about how we take him home to read to each night…

Mrs Hembree decided that Pig the Pug would be perfect for her Year 3 students. She bought a suitcase for their Pig the Pug to travel home in each night and set up guidelines like ours for her students to ensure Pig the Pug enjoys a story is and returned each day.

I was SO excited when I returned home to Melbourne to see that the Year 3 students have started #CougarRidgeReads with Pig the Pug!

Click HERE to see what Pig the Pug is reading with the Year 3 students and then scroll down to see their photos.

Thanks to one of the students, Pig the Pug has a fancy pillow to sit on as he is read to…

and he is enjoying listening to lots of stories with his new American friends….

It makes my teacher librarian heart sing to see students in Melbourne, Australia and Seattle, WA having fun reading to Pig the Pug and sharing their books online at #ReadingIsFun and #CRReads. Thank you Mrs Hembree  and Year 3 for joining in…happy reading!
