Dear Zoo – with a twist

The Preps had an exciting excursion to the Melbourne Zoo yesterday. Today in their Library lessons they told me all about their favourite animals and Mali the new baby elephant was very popular!

Our Library activity today was based on Rob Campbell’s book called Dear Zoo. Instead of reading the book, the Preps watched this video of Dear Zoo and joined in with the singing on the second viewing. It was lots of fun! We will put some photos of our Dear Zoo work on the blog when we finish it next week.

How to draw Splat the Cat with Rob Scotton

splat_cat

Our Junior classes really enjoy the Splat books by Rob Scotton. We met Splat in his first book called Splat the Cat when Splat wakes up wildly worried about his first day at school. Rob Scotton has written and illustrated two more books for Splat. Love, Splat is the perfect book to read on Valentine’s Day because Splat has a special Valentine who has snowy, white paws and pea green eyes, and Splat likes her more than fish sticks and ice cream. At Christmas time we enjoyed reading MerryChristmas, Splat when Splat worried whether or not he had been good enough for Santa to visit him and leave him a really BIG present.

If you click here you will be able to watch Rob Scotton show you how easy it is to draw Splat.

If you draw Splat you might like to bring your picture to me and we will put it on our LRC Blog

Melbourne Zoo's new baby elephant

After 22 months, Melbourne  Zoo’s Asian elephant Dokkoon finally gave birth to a baby girl on January 16th at 1.10am.  She is the first baby elephant in Melbourne Zoo’s 147-year history so her arrival is very exciting!  The newborn baby girl weighs 111 kilograms.  At the moment Dokkoon and her baby are spending time bonding together in the barn before they meet the public.   You can see some photos and videos of the baby elephant here at the Melbourne Zoo website.   Wouldn’t you love to be one of the elephant keepers so you could spend time with the baby elephant!!

What do you think the Melbourne Zoo should name their  baby elephant?
