There are some books that touch your heart when you read them and The Fantastic Flying Books of Morris Lessmore is definitely one of them…and now you can borrow it from our LRC!
Morris Lessmore loved words. He loved stories. He loved books. But every story has its upsets. Everything in Morris Lessmore’s life, including his own story, is scattered to the winds. But the power of the story will save the day.
One day Morris Lessmore is sitting reading on his balcony when he is carried away by a tornado that destroys his home and city. Amongst the devastation he sees a lady in the sky magically being carried by flying books. When she sends a book down to Morris it leads him to an amazing library where he learns that the books need him as much as he needs them…
As you watch this wonderful animated story below think about some of the following…
What other story does the tornado scene remind you of?
Do you recognise the tune that occurs regularly through the story?
Why are both black and white and colour images used in the story?
How important is the music in telling the story?
Look closely at the photos on the wall at the end…
Is there a message in the story for you?
This year The Fantastic Flying Books of Morris Lessmore won an Oscar for the Best Animated Short Film. It can also be enjoyed as a picture book and as an app on your iPad.

Dear Miss Y
I watched the rest of this video at home and really enjoyed it. It was a good thing you read the book to us first otherwise I would have not understood the video. It was a fantastic video to watch.

Hi Harrison
Thank for your comment!
I thought it was important to read the book first before showing the Grade 5 & 6 classes the film. The film was actually written first and then they wrote the book based on the film (it’s usually the other way around!)
I bought my own copy yesterday of “The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr Morris Lessmore” because I can really relate to Morris and his love for books…
Miss Y 🙂
Hey Miss Yeomans,
The animated movie of The Flying Books of Mr Morris Lessmore, really stood our for me because I thought that even though nobody said anything in it, the message was still there; every story matters. Great idea to show us this during library!!

Hi Taylor
Great to hear from you!
I love the message you got from Morris Lessmore and I agree with you!
You’ve heard the saying “Every picture tells a story”. Morris Lessmore is a wonderful example of the power of images (and music) to tell a story.
Hope to see you and 5W in the LRC soon…
Miss Y 🙂
