As the River Flows by Year Four for Mrs Stewart

In Term Three, I lent the Year Fours the picture book A River written and illustrated by Marc Martin for their Inquiry unit about water. I hoped Marc’s visually stunning and thought provoking book about a river’s journey would inspire them…and it certainly did!

What happened was a wonderful collaboration between the students in 4G, 4VT and 4W, their creative teachers and our fabulous Art teacher, Yvonne to create their own book as a gift for our principal, Mrs Stewart as she leaves our school. Mrs Stewart loves metaphors and the Year Fours have used the river to beautifully capture Mrs Stewart’s journey at St Martin’s in their book As the River Flows.

Thank you Mrs Stewart…

This week we will be saying goodbye to Mrs Stewart who has been our inspirational and one of a kind principal for 14 years at St Martin’s. Over the years she has inspired, challenged and supported students and teachers alike to become the best we can be. Mrs Stewart knows every one of our 530 students by name and her smile and positivity have been on display every single day. Mrs Stewart never asks anyone to do anything she wouldn’t do herself and she embodies our school motto “Non Recuso Loborem – I do not refuse the task.”

Mrs Stewart has been a champion for our library and we will miss her greatly. She has dressed up for every Book Week; supported all of our library initiatives and events; left regular comments on our LRC Blog; borrowed books from our library for her holiday reading; replaced our old ‘temporary library’ with a 21st century library and was the first one there to pull up her sleeves and get to work when our brand new library was flooded on Christmas Day, 2011.

It is thanks to Mrs Stewart and her passion for books, reading and learning, that our school has a teacher librarian and a vibrant contemporary library. Thank you Mrs Stewart for for giving our school such a priceless gift…
