Prep PV and Grug

Today at recess I had a lovely surprise when a student from Prep PV popped into the library to read me the book she had written and illustrated about Grug. She also invited me to visit Prep PV where I found the whole class had spent the morning having lots of fun working as authors and illustrators.

Mrs Vincent had read Prep PV the story of Grug and then the clever students had a go at writing and illustrating their own stories about Grug. There were lots of fabulous front covers, great ideas, neat handwriting, colourful illustrations and some books even had their own blurb at the back. The fun didn’t stop there…everyone also made their own Grug character to go with their book!

Thank you for inviting me to share your Grug stories today Prep PV and Mrs Vincent…you made my teacher librarian heart sing!

Have fun reading your Grug story to your family!

Year 4 Sleepover with a story from Tristan Bancks

One of my favourite things to do as a Teacher Librarian is read the Bedtime Story for the Year 4 Sleepover.

Our library has a truly magical feeling at night and you almost expect our book toys to come to life at any moment. Our Story Chair was waiting for the Year 4s and set the scene for the evening with a caricature of Tom Weekly and his latest book My Life and Other Weaponised Muffins by Tristan Bancks. After dinner the students arrived at the library door warm and comfy in their pajamas bursting with excitement and anticipation and eager for their bedtime story.

The story I had chosen for the evening was called The Good Boy. In this story, Tom Weekly planned to be good for 24 hours. Despite some close calls at school during the day, Tom had managed to keep his cool and not get into any trouble. When he arrived home after being good for eight and a half hours he thought the remaining five hours before bedtime would be easy. Wrong! Tom discovered he had left their dog Bando inside while he was at school and Bando had eaten all the ingredients Tom had left on the bench for the French dessert project he had to make and photograph that afternoon! The Year Fours groaned and laughed as Tom came up with a very unique solution for his project by creating ‘Mousse au Chocolate de Bando’. After this story I’m sure many of the students will not look at chocolate mousse in quite the same way again…

Thanks for a fun bedtime story in the library 4G, 4O and 4VT!

The Alien Zoo by Adrian Beck

It’s an exciting time for our author friend Adrian Beck who has a written a new series called The Alien Zoo and the first book is ready to hit book shops from this Saturday, July 1st…perfect for reading over the holidays!

The sign on the enclosure wall read: Greepers.
But it should have said: Heaps Of Greepers.
And maybe there should have been a second sign that said:
‘And They’re Flying Straight For You.’

A dead granddad.
A secret alien zoo.
And only two kids to save all its creatures from a terrible fate.

What could possibly go wrong?

Funny, mysterious and a little bit rude, hold on to your hippos and look inside The Alien Zoo!

The Alien Zoo was inspired by Adrian’s visits to the regular zoo with his daughters. Adrian and illustrator, Heath Mckenzie have played with their crazy ideas to make a book that is funny, creative and it’s interactive too…how cool is that!

Here are Adrian and Heath earlier in the year working on the finishing touches of the The Alien Zoo with their editor….important to get that spelling correct, Adrian!

Hold on to your hippos…get ready to read
The Alien Zoo

If you have a question for Adrian about The Alien Zoo  you can write it in the comment section.

STOP PRESS!!!

Adrian and Heath are holding a Writing and Illustrating Workshop during the holidays on Monday, July 3rd at The Little Bookroom. Click HERE for more information and to BOOK your spot!

The World’s Worst Children 2

There were quite a few excited students when I showed them our copies of David Walliams new book The World’s Worst Children 2 and I’ve noticed some keen students have their own copies of the book already! I’m looking forward to sharing some of these stories during library classes.

Watch the video below (there’s no sound) as it introduces the next ten World’s Worst Children.

You can also read a brief description of each child HERE

I wonder which of the children in this new volume of stories will be your choice for worst child…or if YOU are like any of them in some way?

Do you have an idea for a child for David Walliams’ next book? Add it in the comments if you do…
