The National Year of Reading
This is an exciting year for Australia because it is our first ever National Year of Reading!
The National Year of Reading 2012 is about children learning to read and keen readers finding new sources of inspiration. It’s about supporting and celebrating all the wonderful ways we read and enjoy books. It’s about helping people discover and rediscover the magic of books. And most of all, it’s about Australians becoming a nation of readers.
All over Australia, public and school libraries, book shops, book publishers, book sellers, authors and illustrators will be involved in lots of amazing, fun, reading activities taking place around Australia and online, so people of all ages, from different backgrounds, can discover and rediscover the joy of reading.
We will be doing lots of fun activities to celebrate books and reading at our school too…stay tuned!
Reading is fun…
If you didn’t think reading was fun then think again…
When is reading fun for you?
What makes you laugh when you read?
The joy of books…
I don’t know about you, but I often wonder what our books and book character toys get up to in the LRC at night when nobody else is around. This video about a bookshop at night definitely makes me wonder…
What do you think happens in our LRC at night?
Book Dominoes
I wonder if we should try this in the LRC??
Five Elements of a Story
“Plot, Character, Conflict, Theme,
Setting, yes these are the 5 things
That you’re going to be needing
When you’re reading or writing
A short story that’s mad exciting.”
Do you think about these 5 things when you’re reading or writing a story?
Barney Reading
Elly’s dog Barney is enjoying reading about himself…
Who said dogs can’t read?
Organising the bookcase
How do you like to organise your book case? Alphabetical order, by colour, favourites or just any old way?
Dexter Reading
This is Raff’s 5 month old kitten deciding on a book to read…
It looks like Dexter might share Raff’s love of Andy Griffiths books! Let’s hope Dexter doesn’t decide to read the Geronimo Stilton book….
Catch the Reading Bug
Have you caught the Reading Bug yet?
It’s a Book – By Lane Smith
I still prefer to read a book with pages – do you?
Press Here by Herve Tullet
This book is simple but SO much fun to read!
Book People Unite!
Are you a Book Person? How many book characters do you know?
Read This – Sculpture
What sculpture would you create for your favourite book?

Dear Miss Y
This video is so funny. What a smart baby!
From Daniel
Hi Miss Y,
I just showed my mum and dad the video of that little girl and let me tell you my dad laughed his socks off!
From Stephanie T
Hi Daniel
It’s a smart baby because it’s already learning that reading is fun!
Babies and toddlers learn so much from watching what we do….
Miss Y
Hi Stephanie
I really don’t think you could watch this video had not have a laugh. The baby’s laughter is infectious! Good on you for showing it to your mum and dad and I’m glad your dad laughed his socks off!
Miss Y
I love the baby reading. I have seen my nephew read like this to his little brother who listens like there is a reallly interesting story going on. As long as the pages keep turning and the noise keeps coming out all is good. Brilliant!
I always thought that when Miss Yeomans was in the LRC it was like that. Heaven knows what the LRC gets up to when she has gone. It probably has a rest.
Cheers Mrs Scully
Hi Miss Y,
That baby is so funny! And the “Joy of reading” video would have taken ages to make. Thanks for putting up those videos!
Nicholas
Hi Nicholas
It must have taken hours moving the books on the shelves as well as all the other objects that had to be moved. The people who made the “Joy of Reading” must be VERY patient!
I’m glad to hear you have enjoyed both of the videos.
Miss Y
Dear Miss Y,
I love the baby show.
Love Annabel
Hi Annabel
Thank you for your comment. I’m glad you love the baby video. I love to see the baby laughing and enjoying “reading” so much.
Miss Y
Dear Miss Y
That baby is a copy cat and a funny one too!
From Faith M
Hi Faith
By being a copy cat, the baby is learning how to read.
I think this has been a VERY popular video at our school!
Miss Y
Thankyou for putting my kitten on the blog
He also doesn’t know that you have to eat a book with your eyes, he nibbles books!
Hi Raff
Thank you for emailing me your photo of Dexter!
I hope you keep a close eye on Dexter because I don’t think you would be very happy if he nibbled on your brand new copy of “Just Doomed”! (Dexter might be “doomed”!!)
Miss Y
Hi Miss Y
Mice would be doomed if Dexter read Geronimo Stilton.
He would be doomed if he nibbled Just Doomed!!
Hey Miss Y,
I just wanted to say that i have already finished Hugo, it took me about 3 hours. I really liked it and will probably read it again before we get back to school! Just thought you might be interested to know and I thought this part of the blog would suit it best!!!
Have a good holiday,
<3 Alice
Hi Alice
Wow, that was fast!
“The Invention of Hugo Cabret” is definitely a book you can read many times and find something new each time. The illustrations have so much detail for you to pour over.
I’m going to read Brian Selznick’s latest book “Wonderstruck” over the break.
Enjoy your holiday at Echuca!
Miss Y
